Teenage girls and the things they do amuse me. Considering that I am one, I still feel like an outsider, observing their interests and whereabouts. Before any of my peers who consider themselves above and beyond all the other girls criticize me, let me clear the air by stating my defense. I am basing my statements on general observations. So there is no need for you to whine and say, “That’s not true! I’m different!” Believe me, I know where you’re coming from. Once again, all my blabbering is preceded by “generally speaking”. Let these two words hang over your head for your own good.

When a girl takes interest in a boy, and her girlfriends pick up on the news, she is feasted up. Excited, they huddle in front of her and raise their voices to an unattainable pitch, screaming. She things to herself, “What crime have I done to deserve this noise?”, when all they’re actually doing is teasing. The idea that their friend is possibly in love triggers their adrenaline rush and narrows their attention. The teases then are endless. At this point, I don’t think they care about the said guy anymore. Sure they ask about him – Is he tall? Handsome? Smart? Where does he go to school? – but they stop there. They are more drawn to the idea of their friend being “in love”, and rarely ponder on their friend’s welfare if she chooses to be with the boy. The friend who is undecided becomes even more undecided, because all her friends will have one answer: “Go ahead!” Why wouldn’t they? Only one thing’s occupying their mind, and that is the grand idea of their friend being “in love”, period.

For some reason, I find this behavior sad, hilarious, and awakening. Any matters of the heart tickle the female species. This is of course true with adult women too, but from my standpoint, it is more evident in young teenagers. There’s probably a psychological explanation for this, but I absolutely have no idea what it is. It’s just how girls are wired, I guess. So the next time you meet someone new whom you’ve grown to like, you might want to think twice before consulting your fabulous girlfriends. You might give in to their questionable judgment, and regret it in the end. And the martyr in you will have no one else to blame but herself.

I stare at the world
Standing barefoot on a mountain top
Feeling the cold beneath my feet
Why aren’t you here to warm them up?

I take a trip to the sky
Away from it all once more
Picking stars one by one
Why aren’t you here to keep score?

I blow the candles on my cake
Turning a year older
I smile at their request
Why aren’t you here to make it better?

I sit by the bus stop
Waiting for my life-to-be
Killing time by thinking of tomorrow
Why aren’t you here waiting with me?

I hang by a thread
Looking down about to fall
I don’t see you anywhere
Why aren’t you here at all?

I walked the road alone
You caught me with my feet buried under the ground
You put me out of my misery
I only gave You a warm handshake
I tripped over their gossips
You brought me back to my feet
Now I gave You a genuine embrace
I drowned in my own frustrations
You breathed life into me
This time I gave You my life
Because You gave me yours
I’ll tell them all about You
And what You’ve done for me
I will never forget Your love
